Once a Year

Once a year, I try to travel off the beaten path. I not only love the thrill of meeting new people and seeking out new experiences and cultures, but I also go out of my way to find as much exposure to the "maternal/infant" scene as possible around the world. It makes our similarities crystal clear and our differences not so overwhelming. There are, , believe it or not, other ways to get through pregnancy, experience labor and childbirth, manage the postpartum period and to parent. This is what I search out and discover when I travel far away.

Next week, I will depart for Vietnam. I will have a short detour to Angkor Wat and spend a few days in Bangkok before I travel back to the USA. I expect to have limited internet use but I will try to blog a time or two. If not, come back in 2011 and I will fill you in on South East Asia.

Next year promises to be good for Ready Birth. I will always continue the private sessions that have kept me up and running for thirty years. I will do Labor and Delivery and Baby Basics classes for small groups for ohbaby!fitness. Starting in January, I will be scheduled to teach small childbirth preparation classes for Atlanta Women's Obstetrics and Gynecology clients.

The most pressing need that I have identified this past year is the lack of general information and support for pregnant women and their families offered at many private practices. As health care continues to evolve in our country, we may see more unlicensed personnel dispensing advice and counsel to women with questions and concerns. I predict that there will be groups gathering to discuss pregnancy from start to finish and to fill in any gaps in knowledge and I hope to be a vibrant part of the community of nurses and doctors who take the time to "be there".

Happy Hannukah, Merry Christmas, Good Kwanza and HAPPY NEW YEAR to all.
