Acupuncture

There is a new interest in the practice of eastern medical modalities as a complement to our western medical model. Acupuncture has shown anecdotal evidence and the National Institutes of Health has published studies supporting its use for various gynecologic conditions, including unexplained infertility, PCOS, prenatal woes like back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome and sciatica. Even morning sickness may find relief in the hands of a skilled practioner of acupuncture. Acupuncture can be used for anxiey, depression and pain and even structural conditions. It can be used alone or in conjunction with your provider of medical services.

It is important to measure the intent and clarity as well as the skill set of your acupuncturist. Many American MDs have studied eastern medicine and trained in the ancient art. Anesthesiologists and pain specialists have incorporated eastern treatments into their management care plans.

Western medicine supports the theory of the stimulation of endorphins and other hormones when the needle is inserted into the appropriate site of the body. The mechanisms of the central nervous system i.e. the sympathetic and parasympathetic nerves regulate endocrine function, immunity, gastrointestinal functioning, etc. Stress ( out of bablance ) effects these nerves which can be balanced through the insertion of needles and secretion of endorphins. Hence balance.

Eastern medicne is an ancient study that focuses on balance, harmony, and order, not just of the body but of the environment, relationships, all of life. This theory believes that balance is acheived when imbalances are adjusted by inserting the needles into specific meridians or pathways that direct the qi of a person, the life force. As this clearing takes place the blocks to qi are released and the spirit relaxes. With this relaxation of qi, the entire circulatory system is restored for healthy, normal functioning. And as physical balance is restored, individual clarity regains positions of prominence.
This paves the way for transformative growth and development.

Whichever explanation resonates with you, know that acupuncture is being safely used in this country. There are no contraindications ( as in Chinese herbal medicines not recommended by the FDA )but for particular attention to reflexology and miscarriage. Acupuncture is being used for breech positions, inductions, depression, insomnia, fatigue, pain, edema and nausea and vomiting in pregnancy. You may be surprised whn you ask your medical advisor and they have an acupuncturist that they recommend.
